BE THE CAT™

CARE BEYOND THE CAGE

What if understanding shelter life started with experiencing it from the cat's perspective?

Discover the program
A different perspective

See the shelter through their eyes.

A shelter can be a place of safety. It can also be a world of unfamiliar sounds, limited choices, and constant change. BE THE CAT™ invites the people caring for cats to step into that world—and rethink what everyday welfare looks like.

We ask what the cat experienced, not merely what the human completed.

The training

Less lecturing. More experiencing.

Hands-on, accessible training designed for shelter volunteers, caregivers, and animal welfare professionals. Participants observe, question, and discover practical changes they can bring into their daily care.

01 / EXPERIENCE

Feel their world

Explore how noise, movement, uncertainty, and restricted visibility may shape a cat's experience.

02 / OBSERVE

See the individual

Look beyond a completed task to the cat's behavior, needs, and environment.

03 / ACT

Make meaningful changes

Turn observation into small, practical improvements in comfort, choice, and care.

Program development is underway. We welcome conversations with shelters interested in future training and pilot opportunities.

“The shelter isn't the best place in the world, but it doesn't have to be the worst.”

It's their house. Have some respect.

Behind the program

Meet Kelly Morson.

BE THE CAT™ was created by Kelly Morson, a shelter animal care leader and feline welfare advocate with hands-on experience in medical care, volunteer training, and shelter operations.

Her goal is simple: make meaningful welfare education understandable, memorable, and usable by everyone who cares for shelter cats—regardless of their job title or credentials.
